Pere Ubu Performs in Atlanta
Stooges: TV Eye (outtake)Chrome: TV as Eyes
Le Shok: TV in My Eye
Pere Ubu will perform a live "underscore" to accompany the 1963 film X: The Man with X Ray Eyes at 9:30pm on Tuesday, March 25 at the Plaza Theater in Atlanta. Pere Ubu will also accompany a screening of the film in Charlotte on Monday.
X: The Man with X Ray Eyes was directed by Roger Corman, and starred Ray Milland (as well as a young Don Rickles.) Ray Milland also directed and starred in Panic in Year Zero, a title that Pere Ubu adapted for their first EP release (thirty years ago!) Here is a press release describing Pere Ubu frontman David Thomas' interest in performing music to accompany films. Tickets for the Atlanta show are available from Ticket Alternative.

Jon,
Glad to see you've put up another posting. Even though it's been a month since the last post, QUALITY not quantity!
Pere Ubu is one of my all-time favorite bands. I've seen them at least twenty times in their many years. I'm originally from northwestern Pennsylvania, not far from Cleveland, so I got to see them on numerous occasions in their early days. Nowadays I try & see them if they are playing anywhere near where I am. The last time I saw them was last fall in San Francisco. Right before, I had been back to PA to visit family still there. In preparation for the upcoming Ubu show, I took photos
of "I love that highway, US 322, yeah, yeah, yeah. 6 miles south of Meadville. Aw, there's cinder blocks Moose Lodge 2505" from 'Slow Walking Daddy' of St. Arkansas. I gave them to David & it was a good time we had.
I highly recommend anyone who can go, do so, you will not be disappointed.
Keep the great blogging rockin'.

I'm not sure about the quality of my last couple of posts, but thanks for the encouragement. Haven't felt much like blogging lately.
That is a great story about meeting David Thomas. I have a letter from him somewhere. I had written to him when I was a teenager, and he was kind enough to write back. But I've never seen Pere Ubu, and I foolishly missed Rocket from the Tombs both times they played Atlanta. Ubu inspired me to read a lot of Alfred Jarry when I was a college freshman.
Nathan, you may already know this, but Pere Ubu's album Cloudland is named for Cloudland Canyon in northwest Georgia, a place I have long wanted to visit (along with Providence Canyon in SW GA).
They've always been good with correspondence: sometime in the '80s I wrote the band, too - I forget now what the hell it was about, but I did get a reply. I'm sure it's buried away somewhere. Nowadays, it's all e-mail...but they do answer. Eventually.
There's now a band called Cloudland Canyon. Don't sound anything like Ubu though - one track I've heard (pretty good one) is explicitly an homage to Kraftwerk (it's called "Krautwerk"...).
It sounds like you're likely to attend this showing anyway (more for Pere Ubu's appearance than the film itself, I'm sure), but if you haven't seen X: The Man With X-Ray Eyes it's one of Roger Corman's better directorial efforts. Mind you, it's corny as all get out -- but it's good corny; enjoyable for the whole family.
Now I have two reasons to look forward to it!
