Yacht Rock

I enjoy the music of the Futureheads and Maximo Park, and I generally agree with the influences that are cited in their reviews: XTC, the Jam, etc. But I was listening to an old Yachts record last week and started to wonder if the Futureheads and Maximo Park have heard the Yachts.

After their Stiff Records debut single, "Suffice to Say", the Yachts released two albums on Radar Records. Their self-titled 1979 LP, in particular, contains loads of catchy, energetic and clever pop songs. Singer and keyboard player Henry Priestman went on to the band It's Immaterial, briefly joined Wah! Heat, and finally found fame and fortune as a member of the Christians. Trouser Press calls his organ sound on the Yachts' records "cheesy". But listen to the vocal breakdown at 2:20 of "Love You Love You", and try not to think of the Futureheads. The chorus is brilliant:

I wouldn't climb any mountains for you
Ford any stream, that's a daft thing to do
Yes I'm cynical, cynical, cynical, cynical
Cynical, cynical, cynical through and through

The Yachts: Love You Love You

I love the 1979 LP. The only CD edition I've ever found was a Japanese import, which I gladly paid - well, let's say more than standard price for. This was at the beginning of (or just before) the file-sharing/MP3 era, so downloading the album online was an option I didn't know anything about then.

I'd like to hear the second record. If I remember correctly, the blue Trouer Press book panned it severely.

It is to the Yachts' great credit that, more than 25 years after hearing the song "Yachting Type"-- once--on the radio, I still remember the hook.

James, I think you can get the second Yachts album from New Wave Outpost (http://www.nwoutpost.com/mfv_list.asp). And yes, Trouser Press panned it.

Whoa. Totally, totally see the Futureheads similarities in those breakdowns. Never heard of The Yachts before this -- thanks for posting it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hears it! I thought the Mekons tracks I posted on Tuesday might have influenced the Futureheads and Maximo Park. Maybe I'll post some more Yachts...

Mark, I think I bought the album after reading a review in Creem (or maybe Trouser Press). I agree, there's not a bad song on that first LP. You were in Liverpool at a great time for music! Did you ever see Wah! Heat?

Don't give up on me, Mark. Free time has been hard to come by lately, but I haven't forgotten. I've received more responses to my Yachts post than any other band I've written about, and I want to keep the customers satisfied. "Reply post haste, Box 202."

Well, well. Finally found some info on Yachts but like me, nobody can find it on CD! I have the vinyl but it's not in great nick and I'm a novice in the music sharing arena so any pointers on how I get a download of tracks from the first album?
